Johannes Gutenberg invented the first printing press in Germany around 1440:
Movable type
Gutenberg’s printing press used movable type, which was made from an alloy of lead, tin, antimony, copper, and bismuth. This allowed for the mass production of metal type, which was sturdier and more uniform than woodblock printing.
Oil-based ink
Gutenberg used an oil-based ink that was thick enough to adhere to the metal type and transfer to paper.
Press
Gutenberg’s press was based on existing screw presses, but was adapted to apply firm, even pressure to the printing surface.
Paper
Gutenberg also created a softer and more absorbent paper.
The complete story behind the invention and history of the …
The printing press had a huge impact, making printed materials more widely available and affordable. The Gutenberg Bible, published in 1455, was a high quality and relatively inexpensive publication that established the superiority of movable type for Western languages.
The printing press spread rapidly across Europe and eventually around the world. The first dated prints in England were an indulgence in 1476 and The Dicts or Sayings in 1477.
The first electronic printer was the EP-101, created by Epson in 1968
